     How to Choose the Right

Non-Antibiotic Growth Promoter

The main functions of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGP) include:
1. Sterilization and disease prevention;
2. Adjust intestinal microbial structure;
3. Promote nutrient digestion and absorption;
These are indicators closely related to our economic benefits, and are of great significance as feed additives.

At present, feed additives that can be used to replace antibiotics mainly include feed acidifiers, probiotics, enzymes, plasma, plant extracts (plant essential oils), copper and zinc organic acids, oligosaccharides, prebiotics, Guanidinoacetic acid, and Chinese herbs, and etc.. Substitute products emerge in an endless stream, but how to choose has become the most concerned topic at the feed or farm end.

Traditional additive products can actually promote the growth of animals to varying degrees. Most of the products promote the growth of animals by improving the digestion, absorption and utilization of feed raw materials or increasing the supply of nutrients such as protein and energy. These methods are treating symptoms not the root cause.

Animals in intensive farming often face stress states, such as weaning, refueling, and disease, which lead to many growth and development obstacles and reduced immune function. Its essence is the intestinal barrier function problems such as intestinal development obstruction, functional impairment, increased permeability, and decreased defense ability of animals. If the root cause cannot be cured, it will aggravate the outbreak risk of intestinal problems. The traditional solution starts from the animal's apparent character, and it is difficult to reach the essence of the problem.

Different from traditional functional additive products, bioactive peptides are biological products that make the "intestinal structure and function perfect", and strive to narrow the difference between the growth state of intensive farming animals and the natural growth state of low stress, and are the material basis for remodeling the intestinal barrier function of animals.

For example, EGF itself doesn’t have the ability of bacteriostasis and sterilization, so it can’t directly affect the number of intestinal microorganisms and the structure of flora. The function of EGF on intestinal tract is that it adjusts the metabolism, growth, proliferation and differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells, keeps intestinal epithelial cells metabolically active, accelerates the repair of intestinal injury caused by weaning and other reasons, so to make intestinal mucosa more complete.

Therefore, on the basis of ensuring the normal intestinal structure and perfect intestinal function, the corresponding additives are supplemented according to the actual needs, which can simplify the feed formula, improve the feed utilization rate, and fundamentally promote the growth of animals. Reduce the possibility of repeated symptoms.

Commensal gut microbiota play a fundamental role in the development and regulation of host immunity in mammals. Disruption of the microbiota–immune balance leads to dysbiosis, which is closely associated with increased disease susceptibility. In contrast, the establishment of a stable and defined microbial community supports the maturation of immune functions. Among these, lactic acid bacteria have attracted significant attention due to their strain-specific ability to modulate immune responses and enhance host defense mechanisms.

Pigs are the only animal susceptible to human rotavirus (HRV)-induced diarrhea, making them an important model for studying host-microbe interactions. Studies in gnotobiotic pigs show that probiotic colonization with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium animalis Bb12 enhances HRV-specific IgA responses and reduces diarrhea severity. Similarly, colonization with the simplified Bristol microbiota upregulates serum IgA and IgM levels, supporting intestinal and systemic immune development in newborn pigs. These findings highlight the potential of gut microbiota interventions to modulate immunity and improve pig health.

Antibiotics are widely used in pig production to prevent disease and promote growth. However, their use can disrupt the gut microbiota, reduce beneficial bacteria, and increase opportunistic pathogens. These changes may affect intestinal health, immune function, and the spread of antibiotic resistance genes.
